I sat alone at the kitchen table, the acrid scent of burnt toast still lingering in the air. Outside, the rain drew long, patient threads across the windowpane. In that moment, a raven settled on the windowsill. It looked over at me—without resentment, without kindness, only with a gaze that felt like weary understanding. “When if, then when,” said the raven. I did not reply. I didn’t know how.
